Student-Athlete Mentor

Mission Statement

Student-Athlete Services exists 1) to serve all student athletes by supporting their personal, educational and athletic goals; 2) to keep the welfare of student-athletes in mind at all times while complying with College, conference and NCAA rules and regulations; 3) and to provide relevant programming while advising and challenging student-athletes in order to help them understand and appreciate the value of total education through a well-rounded experience beyond the classroom and athletic realms; the need for developing the whole person utilizing the CHAMPS Life Skills pillars as a template; the importance of enhancing life skills specifically within academic, athletic, career, personal development and service initiatives; and building community within the student-athlete body, athletic department, and College community in order to make more meaningful contributions to society.

General Responsibilities 

  • Assists all and targeted under-represented student-athletes in improving academic standing, study skills, and other educational needs including school, athletic or personal issues while serving as a positive role model.
  • Supervises, counsels, advises, and provides academic and career programming for current student-athletes and assists in recruitment of prospective student-athletes.
  • Has a broad-based referral system throughout campus including Health and Counseling Services, Career Services, The Learning Center, and The Writing Lab, to name a few.
  • Serves as a member of the Athletic Department and a liaison member of the Student Affairs staff who attends staff and personal development sessions.
  • Works directly with the Athletic Directors; the Director of CHAMPS/Life Skills; and the Student-Athlete Services team to provide timely and necessary academic and career programming and assistance.
  • Coordinates the Alumni Career Luncheon with former student-athletes.
  • Coordinates end-of-year awards banquet for student-athletes.
  • Implements the basic goals of the Athletic Program and the Student Affairs Division by promoting individual and community development through the College mission.
  • Encourages social and developmental programming for student-athletes to meet individual, departmental and athletic needs.
  • Works closely with the CHAMPS/Life Skills intern and assists in event planning/follow-through as needed.
  • Organizes and oversees all NCAA and outside scholarship programs, academic honoraries, and leadership conferences.
  • Teaches in and out of the classroom.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Advisory Responsibilities

  • Advise the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
  • Meet regularly with executive committee of the student organization.
  • Set goals with the SAAC and evaluate their progress and assess the effectiveness of the organization's programs.
  • Provide leadership development and team building opportunities for SAAC committee members.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for students.
  • Learn and implement NCAA rules and regulations for D-III and the CHAMPS/Life Skills program.
  • Meet regularly with supervisor, athletic directors, coaches and student conduct officer.
  • Attend on-going staff development and training sessions.
  • Support the athletic department events by attending at least one home event for all sports.
  • Assist in student-athlete orientation programming.
  • Present necessary/requested educational topics at SAAC meetings and/or at team meeting.
