Mission Statement
The Office of Community Outreach (OCO) seeks to uphold the College’s mission of empowering students to become contributing, compassionate citizens of an increasingly global society. In presenting transformational learning experiences through community service and service-learning we strive to: cultivate and sustain reciprocal partnerships with our community; critically examine issues of social justice; support the integration of service into the curriculum; advocate for the value of experiential education through service; and foster an ethic of lifelong service.
OCO sponsors weekly and monthly service programs, alternative break service trips and several special projects including an annual Gift Drive, Make A Difference Day, Martin Luther King Day of Learning and Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. In addition to the Graduate Assistant, the office is staffed by a full-time director, assistant director, and over 30 undergraduate student leaders.
Position Description
The Graduate Assistant is a member of the Student Affairs staff at Baldwin-Wallace College and reports to the Assistant Director of Community Outreach. The Graduate Assistant will perform a variety of roles in the Office, including that of advisor, programmer, facility manager, resource person, project manager, and administrator. In each of these roles, the Graduate Assistant will be expected to support the central mission of the Office of Community Outreach.
Qualifications:
- Experience with community service or volunteer programs.
- Experience and/or interest in educational programming, planning special events, and managing on-going projects.
- Experience and/or interest in working with undergraduate students in an advisory capacity.
- A strong desire to work in a collaborative environment with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree.
- Enrollment in a graduate school program of College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Urban Studies or related field.
Responsibilities:
The OCO Graduate Assistant works approximately 25 hours a week in the Office of Community Outreach and the Archwood House.
Archwood House
- Live on-site at the B-W Archwood House.
- Serve as the Hall Director for the Archwood House assuming related duties including supervision of maintenance, cleaning, assisting residents, coordinating key distribution, and communicating with the Departments of Residence Life and Building and Grounds to maintain the Archwood facility.
- Promote the Archwood House and serve as a liaison to community agencies and B-W departments to make arrangements for the use of the facility; supervise facility usage and events and follow-up regarding damage or improper use.
Advisory and Programming Responsibilities
- Advise the B-W Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
- Oversee the Special Projects Team, a group of students responsible for planning major events such as Saturday of Service, Gift Drive, Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week and Leave It Behind.
- Advise and/or serve as liaison to other service organizations (i.e. Circle K, Rotaract, etc.)
- Assist with the coordination of several major projects which may include OCO Expo, alternative break service trips, etc.
Additional Responsibilities
- Meet regularly with the Office of Community Outreach professional staff.
- Attend OCO staff meetings, retreats and other programs.
- Attend on-going staff development and training programs.
- Work with other staff to promote OCO opportunities utilizing the OCO web page, blackboard site, bulletin boards, brochures, etc.
- Effectively use technology to accomplish assigned tasks.
- Support divisional programs and other B-W campus events when possible.
- Serve as a positive role model for students by exhibiting compassion, self-motivation, leadership, respect for diversity, understanding of the social issues OCO addresses, and a commitment to working toward a more just society.
- Other duties as assigned.
