Position Description
The Graduate Assistant is a member of the Student Affairs staff at Baldwin-Wallace College and reports to the Director of the CHAMPS/Life Skills office. The Graduate Assistant is responsible for implementing the goals set forth by the NCAA and the CHAMPS/Life Skills office. He or she is also responsible to carry out the five main components of the program: Academics, Athletics, Career Development, Personal Development, and Service Commitment. The role of the Graduate Assistant includes the roles of advisor, programmer, counselor, and administrator.
General Responsibilities
- Schedule and host programs & speakers.
- Assist in grant writing and maintenance.
- Provide innovative ways to enhance and engage crowd participation at sporting events.
- Work with the Sports Information Department to coordinate "Spirit Games."
- Coordinate recognition program for student-athletes.
- Act as a liaison between Student Affairs and the Athletic Department (including follow-up and feedback).
- Assess and evaluate student-athletes needs continually.
- Work with the campus community to involve student-athletes in a positive way.
- Develop and implement an array of community service events for the student-athletes.
- Meet frequently with Student Athlete Mentor (SAM) to discuss student athlete issues.
- Work with at risk student-athletes to enhance the college experience.
Advisory Responsibilities
- Advise the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
- Meet regularly with executive committee of the student organization.
- Set goals with the SAAC and evaluate their progress and assess the effectiveness of the organization’s programs.
- Provide leadership development and team building opportunities for SAAC committee members.
Additional Responsibilities
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor for students.
- Learn and implement NCAA regulation of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program.
- Meet regularly with supervisor, athletic directors, coaches and student conduct officer.
- Attend on-going staff development and training sessions.
- Support the athletic department events by attending at least one home event for all sports.
- Assist in student-athlete orientation programming.
- Teach in and out of the classroom.
- Present necessary or requested educational topics at SAAC meetings and/or at team meeting.
