The OCO Expo is a great way to learn more about the service opportunities offered by the Office of Community Outreach and other service organizations. The Expo is held every fall semester.

Every fall, the Office of Community Outreach holds a campus-wide service day in conjunction with organizations in Berea and the Greater Cleveland area. Students, faculty and staff come together to serve with a number of different organizations. Last year participants served in a variety of ways such as cleaning, sorting food, decorating for the holidays, and raking leaves to spending time with older adults at a nursing home. Join us on November 8th for SOS 2008! |

Gift Drive

Each winter, the Office of Community Outreach, in collaboration with Cuyahoga County's Department of Children and Family Services, collects gifts for children who are in foster care during the holidays. The B-W community comes together to purchase gifts, donate wrapping paper and supplies, and wrap the gifts. Last year, we collected over 400 gifts for CCDCFS! Look for our Giving Tree in the Union Lobby in November! |
MLK Day of Learning
OCO celebrates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by inviting fourth graders from two area schools to participate in a day of educational activities at B-W. Reading, art and music activities related to Dr. King's life are facilitated by B-W students, faculty and staff. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
A week of education and service, Hunger and Homelessness brings social justice issues to campus. Past Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week activities have included a "Hoops for Hunger" basketball tournament and food drive, shed building with Habitat for Humanity, a 30-hour famine, "Empty Bowls" and the "Face-to-Face: Portraits of Cleveland Homeless" photo display. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week 2009 will take place March 23-28.
Project Affinity Summer Service Experience
| Project Affinity is an urban summer service program in which four to six students live together as a community at the Archwood House, a B-W owned facility in Cleveland's Brooklyn Centre neighborhood. Participants adhere to a philosophy of simple, community living. Through service and community events, students are able to develop a direct relationship, an "affinity," with individuals on Cleveland's West Side. As a group, participants explore social justice issues including hunger, homelessness, mental health and HIV/AIDS. Students receive room, board and a living stipend for their participation. They may also apply for internship credit through Career Services. |
