Baldwin-Wallace College Facts

General

  •  An accredited private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
  • Was founded in 1845 by John Baldwin.
  • Merged with neighboring German Wallace College in 1913.
  • One of the first colleges in Ohio to admit students without regard to race or gender.  B-W is marked by an unswerving commitment to provide quality education for all people, regardless of station.
  •  In 1995, celebrated its sesquicentennial and reaffirmed its commitment to personalized education that stresses individual growth, community service and responsiveness to new ideas in a rapidly changing society.
  • Located in Berea, Ohio, a town of 19,000 persons.  Berea was founded in 1836 and is now a suburb of Cleveland.  Cleveland's downtown area is about 20 minutes from the center of Berea and is home to many Fortune 500 companies and cultural opportunities.  Cleveland and its adjacent suburbs have a population of approximately 1.5 million. 
  • Regularly included among "America's Best Colleges" in the annual survey by U.S. News & World Report.  In 2004, was ranked tenth among regional colleges and universities in the Midwest.

 Student Body

  • Approximately 3,100 full-time undergraduate day students, 700 evening and weekend adult learners and 800 graduate students.
  • 36 U.S. States and 29 countries are represented among the student body.
  • Each year nearly 29% of entering freshmen rank in the top decile of their graduating class while more than 57% typically rank in the top quarter.
  • 81% of first-time freshman students live on campus; 58% of degree-seeking undergraduate students live on campus.

  • 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio with an average class size of 18 students.

Other Program Information

  • Students from all majors participate in internships and provide employers an avenue to expand their professional staff while contributing to the career development of a student.  The Career Services Internship Program provides more than 800 internship opportunities each year.
  • Our Explorations & Study Abroad Program has a unique semester-long "Road Scholar USA Tour" taking students and professors across the country to visit historical sites, study diverse cultures, and complete service projects.

  • The Baldwin-Wallace Bach Festival, featuring international artists of the highest caliber, is the oldest collegiate Bach Festival in the United States and is presented annually in April.
