Alpha Sigma Lambda is the national honor society for Evening and Weekend college students. The local chapter, Beta Upsilon, is one of more than 270 chapters throughout the country. It is a chapter, which sponsors annual social and philanthropic events. It recognizes outstanding full-time and adjunct faculty through special awards and arranges campus scholarships open to all undergraduate Evening and Weekend college students. Membership selection occurs once a year during fall semester and is based on a grade point average of at least 3.2 for 24 or more hours at Baldwin-Wallace (see Membership Requirements), plus evidence of volunteered campus and/or community leadership.
Alpha Sigma Lambda – Beta Upsilon Chapter
A National Honor Society for Baldwin-Wallace Adult Learners in Continuing Higher Education.
What is ASL?
Alpha Sigma Lambda (ASL) is a national honor society established to recognize and promote outstanding scholarship and leadership in adult students. ASL was born over 50 years ago at Northwestern University, and has grown today to more than 270 chapters nationwide.
Baldwin-Wallace College has maintained an ASL chapter, Beta Upsilon, since 1981. Its members must meet the academic and leadership standards set forth by the national organization, of course, but they have also proven themselves to be caring and fun-loving individuals, eager to share and proud to serve.
Beta Upsilon Chapter generally has 20-40 undergraduate members, plus active alums. Scholarships are awarded annually for the benefit of all evening/weekend students.
What does ASL do?
ASL members plan and carry out a variety of activities, including community service projects and campus events. The Beta Upsilon Chapter activities include:
New-member induction dinner
Faculty Excellence Awards (one adjunct and full-time)
Provide scholarships to B-W students
Co-sponsor student events
Community service projects (Charitable Missions)
ASL members serve on special committees when asked by college departments to help analyze policies and procedures for students.
Beta Upsilon Chapter has a long history of making an impact in our society by supporting a variety of charitable organizations. Over the years, these have included the ASL Adult Education Foundation (national scholarships), Genesis House (safe house for abused families—United Way agency), Oxfam (international world-wide poverty relief), the Center for Prevention of Domestic Violence (battered women's shelter and hotline), Interfaith Hospitality Network, visits to Berea Children's Home and senior centers. We believe in sharing our fortune and talents, so it is not unusual for a meeting or a dinner to include a food or clothing drive as well.
Membership Requirements
Potential members must be enrolled as adult students (undergraduate, evening or weekend), and must have attended a recognized college or university for at least four semesters. Requirements include 24 graded semester hours or equivalent at B-W. At least 12 hours must be outside of the major field and should be in the liberal arts and sciences. The student must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2
Applicants must also show evidence of leadership, whether in a campus or community setting. (Employer-required tasks are generally not considered.)
How do I apply?
Application information is automatically sent to those students who meet the minimum academic requirements (usually during fall semester). Applicants who complete their applications and return them in a timely fashion will be considered for membership by a committee of members and faculty advisors. In addition, GPA and hours are verified by the Adult and Continuing Education office.
