The Division III collegiate tennis season is split between fall (two tournaments) and spring (dual match play and Ohio Athletic Conference and NCAA championship tournaments). This is the second and final week of fall competition as B-W also participated in last weekend’s Oberlin College Invitational Tournament.
At the 2008 ITA tourney, sophomore Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) was the lone Yellow Jacket competing in the Main Singles draw (the Top-64 ranked student-athletes in attendance in the Central Region). Pecinsovsky lost her first match to Sarah Short of Denison University, 6-3 and 6-1. In the consolation bracket, Pecinsovsky defeated Elisa Sambol of Washinton University (Mo), 6-2, 4-6 and 10-6, but was then eliminated by Albion (Mich.) College’s Shelley Zamler, 6-3 and 6-2.
In Main Doubles draw (Top-32 tandems), Pecinovsky and junior Andrea Essig (Conneaut/ Ashtabula Edgewood) lost their opening match, 8-1. The duo then won by default twice before being eliminated in the semifinals by a duo from Denison University, 8-3.
In the non-championship Oberlin Open singles play, freshman Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) had the most success as she advanced all the way to the championship match before being beaten by Lizzy Whitlatch of DePauw (Ind.) University, 6-1 and 6-1. En route to the championship match, Greene beat Olivet (Mich.) College’s Jaclyn Mummaw, 6-1, 2-6 and 10-6, in her first match; Kalamazoo (Mich.) College’s Rebecca Thomson, 6-3 and 6-0, in the second match; Manchester (Ind.) College’s Jordin Youst in the quarterfinals, 6-2 and 6-3; and Wooster’s Elissa Lauber, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0, in the semifinals.
In addition in singles play, sophomore Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green) defeated Ohio Wesleyan’s Becky Simon, 6-2 and 6-2, before being eliminated in the second round. Also, senior Alyssa Trampert (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Essig each lost their first first match. In the consolation round, Essig won her first match against Olivet’s Celeste Gruber, 8-3, but then lost in the quarterfinals. Trampert lost her first consolation match.
In doubles play, both the tandems of sophomore Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) and Pelosi and Greene and Trampert received byes in their opening matches, but then lost in the second round. In the consolation bracket, Marshall and Pelosi received a bye, then won two straight matches to advance to the final before being ousted. The duo defeated a tandem for Ohio Wesleyan, 8-3, in the quarterfinals and a tandem from Oberlin, 8-1, in the semifinals. Greene and Trampert also received a bye and then beat a pair from Wooster, 8-4, in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals where they were beaten by the same duo that beat Marshall and Pelosi in the finals.
