BEREA, OHIO — Six Baldwin-Wallace College student-athletes have been selected to the 2008 Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference team for track and field and cross country. The selections include five women and one male.
The five women’s honorees are seniors Kristen Balogh (Loveland), Courtney Beckett (Monaca, Pa./ Hopewell) and Megan Cathcart (Parma/ Senior), junior Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg) and sophomore Brittany Giesken (Ottawa/ Ottawa-Glandorf). For the men, senior Aaron Apathy (Parma/Padua Franciscan) was selected.
Balogh, a chemistry major who earned a 3.91 grade point average, has been a four year participant in both cross country and track and field. This fall in cross country, Balogh earned All-OAC honors with a 10th place finish at the OAC Championship Meet. In outdoor track this spring and at the OAC Championship Meet, Balogh was a part of the first place 4 x 800 meter relay team.
Beckett, a business administration major who earned a 3.73 grade point average, is a four-year letterwinner in track and field who specialized in the triple jump. During the 2007-2008 indoor season, Beckett placed first in the triple jump at both the Division III All-Ohio Meet and the OAC Indoor Championship Meet. In outdoor track, she earned second place finishes in the triple jump at the All-Ohio Meet and the OAC Championship Meet.
Cathcart, a sociology major who earned a 3.32 grade point average, is a three-time OAC champion in the high jump as she won the 2006 indoor and the 2005 and 2007 outdoor crowns. She has also earned numerous other All-Ohio and All-OAC honors. During this season’s OAC Outdoor Championsips, Cathcart placed tied for fourth in the high jump.
Paul, an English adolescent education major who earned a 3.33 grade point average, is one of the top sprinters in the OAC. She has been an All-Ohio and All-OAC performer in each of her three years in both indoor and outdoor track, which includes four indoor and two outdoor OAC titles. Paul holds school records in the 300 and 500-meter dashes and the sprint medley relay. This is Paul’s second consecutive Academic All-OAC selection as she was an honorable mention selection last year.
Giesken, a biology major who earned a 3.70 grade point average, earned honorable mention Academic All-OAC status. She has participated in both cross country and track & field for the past two seasons. During the 2007-2008 indoor season, Giesken was a part of the OAC Champion distance medley relay team. This spring during the outdoor season, Giesken was also a member of the first place 4 x 800 meter relay team at the OAC Championship Meet.
Apathy, an accounting major who earned a 3.75 grade point average, has been a four-year letterwinner in both cross country and track. He earned All-OAC honors at the 2008 OAC Indoor Championship Meet as a part of the second place distance medley relay team. This spring, Apathy also earned All-OAC honors as a member of the third place 4 x 800 meter relay team at the OAC Outdoor Championship Meet. A year ago, he earned Academic All-OAC accolades.
