BEREA, OHIO -- The seventh-ranked (www.nscaa.com Division III national poll) Baldwin-Wallace College men’s soccer team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College, 2-0, tonight (Saturday, October 4, 2008) on the pitch of Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in the OAC season opener for each team.
With its victory, the Yellow Jackets improved to 11-0-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC and extended both their best start to a season in school history and the longest winning streak in school history. With its loss, Mt. Union fell to 5-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.
B-W gained a 1-0 lead at the 21:07 mark of the match when senior midfielder Cory Kovach (Chagrin Falls/ Kenston) scored on a penalty kick for his fifth goal of the season. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead at the 38:10 mark when sophomore midfielder Jeff Grater (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) scored his first goal of the season on a freshman forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) assist. The 2-0 lead would stand to be the final.
In goal for B-W, junior keeper Russ Mika (Medina/ Senior) played all 90 minutes in goal, faced 14 shots and made four saves to improve to 6-0 this season. He also recorded his first shutout of the season.
B-W won the battle of shots, 17-14, and Mount Union took the corner kicks, 7-0.
After 11 matches in 2008, Vandendriessche leads the team with seven goals and one assist for a total of 15 points. Sophomore forward Tyler Leister (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) and senior midfielder Andy Synk (Strongsville) each have 12 points.
B-W returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 when it travels to Tiffin, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College at 4:00 p.m. Next Saturday, Oct. 11, the Yellow Jackets host Otterbein College at Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
