a Nonleague Game; Play at ONU on Saturday
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated nonleague foe Myers University, 10-6, today (Thursday, April 7) at Heritage Field in Berea. The win was the second straight for the Yellow Jackets as they improved to 8-6 overall.
B-W scored seven times in the bottom of the second, two more in the bottom of the third and one more in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead. The B-W starters then departed and Myers decided to make the game interesting as it scored three times in each the seventh and nine innings before senior Andrew Russell (Indianapolis, Ind./ Eastern Hancock) got the final two batters to end the game and earn a save.
Offensively, the Yellow Jackets had eight base hits with junior centerfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) leading the way with two hits, two runs scored and two runs batted-in.
On the mound, sophomore Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) earned the victory to improve to 3-1 overall. He allowed. Wochele was followed on the mound by sophomore J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) and then junior Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Steele) pitched the ninth inning.
In the second inning, B-W sent 12 batters to the plate en route to its seven runs. Green knocked home his two RBI to give B-W a 2-0 lead. A double by senior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hills, Pa./ East Pennsboro) brought home two more and both senior All-OAC third baseman/ designated hitter Mike Turchan (Mayfield) and junior All-OAC leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) each had an RBI.
In the third inning, Green led off with his second base hit, stole second and later scored on a sacrifice flyout by Albright. Turchan earned his second RBI of the game when he later walked with the bases loaded.
B-W scored its final run in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade) had an infield hit and drove home Quarando who reached first base via an error to lead off the inning.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday, April 9 when they travel to Ada, Ohio to play Ohio Northern University at Wander Field in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. The next Yellow Jacket home games are on Tuesday, April 12 when they host Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in a doubleheader at Heritage Field at 1:00 p.m.
