Losing 10-6 and Winning 6-5
BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Muskingum College today (Tuesday, April 5, 2005) at Heritage Field in Berea. The Fighting Muskies won the first game by a score of 10-6 and the Yellow Jackets won the nightcap, 6-5, with a four-run bottom of the seventh inning.
With its split, the Yellow Jackets are now 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the OAC. With its split, Muskingum is now 12-8 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, junior second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) walked to lead off and senior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hills, Pa./ East Pennsboro) then reached on an error to put runners at first and second base. After a strikeout, senior All-OAC pitcher/ designated hitter Mike Turchan (Mayfield) singled to load the bases. Then, junior All-OAC leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) singled to score Brown and Albright to make the score 5-4. Then junior centerfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Following the second out, sophomore first baseman Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) had the game-winning hit that plated Turchan and pinch runner Jay Watson (New Philadelphia).
In the first game, B-W had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but a called third strike ended a rally and gave the Fighting Muskies the win. Muskingum tallied three times in the first inning and once in the second to lead 4-0. B-W scored twice in the bottom of the second to trail 4-2. After the Fighting Muskies scored three more runs in the fifth to take a 7-2 advantage, B-W scored twice in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to 7-4. The Muskies then added three more runs in the top of the seventh to lead 10-4 entering the bottom of the seventh. B-W closed the gap to 10-6 on solo back-to-back homeruns by junior rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) and Turchan and then loaded the bases before the questionable called third strike.
Despite the loss, Melito, Turchan and junior designated hitter Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Steele) each had a pair of hits. In addition, Farrell and Brown each had a hit to extend their hitting streaks to 13 and 14 games, respectively. On the mound, senior righthander Bob Glavan (Mentor) started and took the loss to fall to 1-2 this season.
In the nightcap, B-W scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead when Farrell drove in Brown and Turchan with a wind-blown double to center field. Unfortunately, the Muskies came right back with two runs in the top of the fourth and added three more in the sixth to lead 5-2 entering the final frame.
Offensively, Melito and Farrell led the way with two hits each. In addition, Brown extended his hitting streak to 15 games and Farrell his to 14 contests. On the mound, sophomore righthanded reliever Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) earned the win to improve to 2-1 overall.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Thursday, April 7 when they host first-year program Myers University in a single nonlegaue game at Heritage Field at 3:30 p.m.
