Yellow Jacket Baseball Team Splits an OAC Doubleheader at Mt. Union, Now

Hosts Wooster Tomorrow and Muskingum on Saturday

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Wednesday, March 30) at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. The Purple Raiders won the first game, 6-5, and the Yellow Jackets won the nightcap, 8-6 in eight innings. The twinbill was the OAC opener for each team.

With its split, B-W is now 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. With its split, Mt. Union is now 7-8-1 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.

In the first game, Mt. Union scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 5-1 Yellow Jacket lead. After the Raiders took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning, B-W scored once in the fourth and four times in the fifth to take a commanding advantage into the final frame.

At the plate, junior All-OAC left fielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) led the way with three of B-W's seven base hits as he had a single, double and triple. On the mound, senior righthander Bob Glavan (Mentor) pitched a solid first six innings before giving way to a pair of relievers in the seventh. Senior Nick Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) was saddled with the loss and is now 1-1 this season.

In the second game, B-W scored twice in the first extra inning to claim its split. Senior and winning pitcher Mike Turchan (Mayfield) singled to score classmate Jason Albright (Camp Hills, Pa./ East Pennsboro) with the winning run. Albright led off the inning with a single. Junior third baseman Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Steele) later singled home Turchan with the insurance run.

B-W scored twice in the second inning for a 2-0 lead and Mt. Union countered with a run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 2-1. B-W then added four runs in the top of the third, led by Turchan's third homerun of the season -- a two-run shot -- to give B-W a 6-1 lead. But again Mt. Union tallied five runs off of Turchan in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. In the eighth, Turchan took care of matters by knocking home the winning run and then getting the Raiders out to improve his pitching mark to 1-1 overall.

At the plate, Turchan and Farrell led the way with a pair of hits each.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow, Thursday, March 31 when they host nonleague rival The College of Wooster in their home opener. The single game clash begins at 3:30 p.m. at Heritage Field. On Saturday, April 2, B-W also will hosts OAC rival Muskingum College in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
