2008 Baldwin-Wallace College Academic All-Stars (in PDF format)
BEREA, OHIO — Baldwin-Wallace College veteran Head Baseball Coach Bob Fisher announced the 2007-2008 team award winners. They are freshman outfielder Ben Stoper (Medina/ Senior), junior righthanded pitcher Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City), junior first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood), junior righthanded pitcher Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere), junior centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) and sophomore righthanded pitcher Justin Novak (Strongsville).
Stoper was honored as the Outstanding Freshman after an impressive late-season performance. Stoper began the season with the junior varsity team and was promoted to the varsity. In eight appearances, including five starts, he batted .381 (eight base hits in 21 at-bats) with five runs scored, three runs batted-in and a .458 on-base percentage.
Jaskowak was the staff ace and chosen as the Outstanding Pitcher. He led or tied for the team lead in appearances (11), starts (nine), wins (five), innings pitched (51.1), complete games (four) and earned run-average (4.73 ERA) among starters. On April 10, he had his best outing when he threw a complete-game four-hit shutout against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College. To date, Jaskowak owns an 8-4 career mark with 69 strikeouts. He also earned Academic All-OAC honors.
Kreisher earned both the Gold Glove award for the second straight season as well as the Big Stick Award. He committed just four errors in a team-high 335 chances for a .988 fielding average. At the plate, Kreisher had 51 hits in 150 at-bats for a .340 batting average, including tying a school single-season record with 18 doubles. He also drove in a team and career-best 29 runs. Kreisher begins his senior season with a .346 career batting average (113-of-327) with 67 runs scored, 28 doubles, six triples, six homeruns and 72 RBI. He also owns a .993 career fielding average.
Brandon Fredericks and Cody Kidd were both honored with the Yellow Jacket award. It is given annually to an exemplary Yellow Jacket baseball student-athlete who “demonstrated a year-round dedication to baseball and to the team, as well as the positive attitude toward the game, his teammates, along with a work ethic and a style of unselfish play and leadership, that, if emulated by anyone, would make for a better player and a better teammate”.
Fredericks is regarded by his teammates as one of the hardest workers in the program, including on the field, in the weight room, and in the classroom. On the mound, he compiled a 4-3 record in nine appearances, including eight starting assignments, and struck out a team-high 35 batters. For his career, Fredericks is 4-6 and has struck out 44 batters.
Kidd served as a co-captain and hit .387 with a team-high 60 base hits in 155 at-bats with a team-leading 34 runs scored. He also led B-W with 13 stolen bases and had 26 runs RBI. This season, Kidd was selected second-team All-OAC, Academic All-OAC, and first-team ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV for the second consecutive season. He highlighted his accolades by being named as a third-team ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-American. He will enter his senior season with a .375 carrer batting average (122-of-325) with 91 runs scored, 13 doubles, eight triples, three homers, 52 RBI, 39 stolen bases and a .981 fielding average.
Novak earned a 4.0 grade point average for the entire academic year and was selected for the Guy Fisher Award for Academic Excellence. A business administration and accounting major, Novak started five games and worked four others in relief and finished with a 2-2 record with a 5.12 ERA.
